In the shadow of the state capital Düsseldorf, Hilden is increasingly developing into an alternative residential location. "Go south" is the motto for many Hilden residents and newcomers. Today's S1 S-Bahn line is 97 km long and runs from Dortmund – Bochum – Essen – Mülheim (Ruhr) – Duisburg – Düsseldorf Airport – Düsseldorf – Hilden – Solingen.
