Michaeligarten Berg am Laim hat eine lange Geschichte. Bereits im Jahr 812 wurde der Stadtteil erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Der Begriff Laim bedeutet im heutigen Deutsch "Lehm".
Der Name weist auf die natürliche Beschaffenheit dieses Gebietes hin. Von Ismaning bis Berg am Laim zog sich eine ein Kilometer lange Lehmzunge hin, die dem Gebiet und seinen Bewohnern Wohlstand brachte.
