Eiderstedt

Macro location

It's easy to overlook the fact that Eiderstedt is a small world in itself when you're in a hurry on the B5 to Föhr, Amrum or Sylt. The peninsula juts out into the North Sea like a nose south of the North Frisian district town of Husum. Over the course of centuries, the peninsula was reclaimed from the sea and joined together by dikes from the three islands of Everschop, Eiderstedt and Utholm. The former seabed is still very productive for agriculture, but tourism also plays an important role today. The towns of St. Peter-Ording, Tönning and Garding as well as the Westerhever lighthouse, the landmark of the peninsula, are particularly well known.

The gigantic Eider barrier at the river mouth has been protecting people from storm surges since 1973: 250-ton movable steel gates brace themselves against the North Sea or allow the Eider to flow into the sea. A lock opens for fishermen and sailors where arctic terns nest. Behind it is a landscape shaped by the sea, wind and human hands.

The Eiderstedt peninsula is quiet and tranquil, but also active and lively and offers plenty of excursion options. Eiderstedt's landscape is characterized by sandbanks, dunes and salt marshes. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park (designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009) as well as the Katinger Watt and the seal beds in the Wadden Sea are very popular ecological attractions. It is a paradise for bird watchers, as many species of birds settle here during the breeding season.

The Westerhever lighthouse, which is presented in bright red and white, flanked on the right and left by two small houses, is Eiderstedt's best-known landmark nationally and is visible from afar. That's not really surprising, because the Eiderstedt peninsula impresses with the vastness of the landscape and has always been considered a rich marshland with its good soil, surrounded by water on three sides - by the Hever, the North Sea and the Eider.

Eiderstedt has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine. Regional dishes such as “Saure Rolle”, “Wiensupp un Schink”, freshly peeled crabs or “Mehlbüddel” are the best known. Eiderstedt is also famous for its “Eiderstedter Rind”, which has its own seal of quality and makes chefs and gourmets light up their eyes. In spring, lamb specialties can also be found in many restaurants and parish taverns. The lush salt marshes and healthy nature ensure that the meat is particularly tender and tasty.

For all fans of sport and fitness, the landscape offers plenty of opportunities to get active. Cycling tours on flat terrain, inline skating, horse riding and also hiking routes are available here. Water sports are a given on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. Sailing, surfing, swimming, fishing or the famous beach sailing in St. Peter-Ording are examples. There are also the very “strange” sports of the locals: Klootstock jumping, Boßeln and ring riding are still popular today and are often part of a folk or village festival.

Sankt Peter-Ording

Microlocation

Sand was St. Peter-Ording's curse for centuries, a reason to leave. Today he is a reason to come. A wide beach, exposed to wind and tide, crisscrossed by tidal creeks, everything about it rough and stormy and magnificent. In short: St. Peter-Ording is a classic. The dimensions of the beach at Sankt Peter-Ording not only defy any direct comparison, they are also almost unrivaled in Europe. In purely mathematical terms, beach visitors have around ten million square meters of creamy white, fine sandy expanse at their feet. The relaxing maritime experience stretches twelve kilometers in length and up to two kilometers in width. The pile dwellings characteristic of St. Peter-Ording are located at the five main bathing areas. There are always three stilt houses in a group, consisting of the lifeguard with beach chair rental, the toilets and a restaurant. Sankt Peter-Ording was once known as a poorhouse where poor people lived. The first houses were made of wood that was washed up on the North Sea coast.

The roofs were simple thatched roofs. During this period there were many Haubarge, a typical Frisian architectural style, on Eiderstedt. In 1877 the first hotel was built and the architectural style changed. The first private villas were gradually added. The first sanatorium was built in 1913 and other spa clinics followed after the Second World War. From 1970 onwards, more holiday apartments and holiday homes were built. The Frisian architectural style is still visually reproduced by many builders today. Thatched single- and two-family houses beautify the townscape and are evidence of today's demands on modern holiday property. Sankt-Peter-Ording is an excellent address for vacation and relaxation as well as for long-term housing on the North Sea coast. A thermal bath with sea water, a modern therapy center, fitness facilities, a golf course, the west coast park, the local museum, as well as kindergarten, primary school, secondary schools, clinics, doctors, pharmacies, bakeries, butchers, supermarkets, restaurants, specialist and craft businesses ; No wish is left unfulfilled here.
