The Schwanheim district lies on the southern banks of the Main river, about 7 km from downtown Frankfurt. Schwanheim shares borders with the Frankfurt city forest and the districts of Höchst, Nied and Griesheim to the north, Niederrad to the east and the area surrounding the airport to the south.
This district, the largest of the Main metropolis, is home to around 20,000 inhabitants.
The area's remaining sand dunes were placed under nature protection in 1984 and the entire area was named "Schwanheimer Düne". Schwanheim was once a farming village and only developed into an industrial district in the middle of the 20th century. Over the years, however, the district has retained its reputation as an artists' village. Even today, some quaint and romantic corners of Schwanheim testify to this story.
Particularly worth visiting are the Schwanheim Forest and the Schwanheim dunes mentioned above. The forests of Schwanheim are filled with oaks and hornbeams and represent a particularly valuable biological and ecological remnant of the former Main-Altaue biosphere. In early summer, a whole sea of wood anemone ("Buschwindröschen") blossoms attracts visitors and residents from accross the wider Frankfurt region.
The “Schwanheimer Düne” are a 58 hectare inland dune landscape that's home to an impressive range of flora and fauna – always worth a visit. The Schwanheimer Heimatmuseum and the Frankfurt Transport Museum complement the leisure options on offer here.
Along the streets of Alt-Schwanheim, shops and supermarkets offer everything for your everyday errands. You can reach the A5 by car via the Frankfurt-Niederrad junction.
