Project description
Maritime living at the Kaufhauskanal
An historic address
Harburger Schloßstraße is one of the oldest streets in Hamburg. Many buildings in this district are protected as historic monuments or have been extensively renovated. The Bornemann residence on Harburger Schloßstraße dates back to 1565 and is one of Hamburg's oldest townhouses.
Finds uncovered between Harburger Schloßstraße and the Kaufhauskanal (roughly, 'department store canal') during excavations undertaken by Hamburg's archaeological museum testify to the fact that the nucleus of Harburg was located on the site of this new residential quarter. A pilgrim path along Jakobusweg has been revived and today runs from Hamburg's Jacobikirche past Harburger Schloßstraße to the south.
The neighbourhood around this inland harbour between a southern arm of the river Elbe and Harburger City has rapidly developed in recent years with an exciting mix of residential and commercial space, with Harburger Schloßstraße once again connecting the castle island on the inner harbour with the centre of Harburg.

Maritime Residences
The striking architecture deployed here is based on the competition entry by Copenhagen architects BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. Modelled on the charming "crooked" look of the old neighbourhood's half-timbered houses, the building's monolithic forms create connection between modern architecture and the environment. The exterior forms of these sculptural structures are determined by steep pitched roofs with diagonal ridgelines. Facades and roof surfaces are clad with dark-hued zinc sheet metal, while window reveals and loggias are offset with lighter tones.
As part of an overall ensemble totalling nine buildings, the three buildings in the present construction phase will house another 32 condominiums with 2 to 5 rooms spread over up to three levels and living spaces of 54 to 145 m2. An underground car park is accessed directly from Harburger Schloßstraße and is shared with the adjacent residential complex to the west, offering plenty of parking spaces for cars and bicycles in common bicycle rooms and private basements.
Garden areas are criss-crossed by paths and dotted with squares and tapered planting zones. The concept includes the planting of grasses, shrubs and trees and is based on the idea of a Nordic landscape, a scene that emphasises the unusual characteristics of the architecture that it envelops. A new path along the banks of the canal is directly accessible from the property, running over a small bridge to the warehouse that gives the canal its name. This historic building is heritage-listed and has been extensively renovated for use as an arts and culture hub.

Behrendt design lines
Developed by architects specialising in interior design, Behrendt design lines offer an ambience that suits every style: MY HOME conveys a sense of security and captivates with clear contours and contrasts. LIVING CITY is based on the pulse of the metropolis. The design language is modern and straightforward. PURE NATURE picks up on the round, soft forms of nature and radiates peace and harmony.
These design concepts create a harmonious interplay of colours, shapes and materials: parquet, doors, switches and electricals as well as tiles and sanitary fittings in the bathrooms are all professionally coordinated. The apartments are equipped with underfloor heating and a towel radiator for the bathroom. At the entrances are intercoms with camera for access control. In the apartments, a device for receiving the video intercom signal can be installed by special request. Security in your home is further heightened by multiple locks on entrance doors, laminated safety glass and lockable window handles on the ground floor, among other instances of anti-burglary hardware.
Electrical installation, telephone outlets and multimedia cables in living rooms and bedrooms allow flexible use of telephone, internet and television. Apartments from construction project 319 are offered outfitted with Behrendt's MY HOME design line.

Harburg reinvents itself
Harburg's inland port was a focal point for the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg 2013 and has developed rapidly from a district characterised by commercial and office spaces to a lively residential and working quarter.
The maritime atmosphere and the special history of the neighbourhood are hugely attractive. The water-side ambience tempts one to enjoy a break in a beach chair and watch the sun set over the harbour. Events such as the Harburger Binnenhafenfest ('Harburg Inland Harbour Festival') and the Drachenbootrennen ('Dragon Boat Race') on the Veritaskai as well as the Nacht der Lichter ('Night of the Lights') create a sense of identity for the new neighbourhood and are popular highlights well beyond the district.
Whether you're after the spectacular at "Silo 16", classic Italian at "momento di" or playful cheffing at "Schwerelos", a distinct gastronomic scene has long since established itself in the new district, attracting not only Harburger residents for a detour through the inland harbour. Another attraction is the old town of Harburg with its many cosy restaurants set in old half-timbered houses around the Lämmertwiete. Harburg's pedestrian zone around Lüneburger Straße, the Phoenix Center and Harburg Arcaden offer a modern shopping experience, alongside its historic counterpart: a 400-year-old daily market offering fresh produce from the farms of the Old Country, the Lüneburg Heath and the Vierlanden.
This new residential district between the Kaufhauskanal and Harburger Schloßstraße also offers good transport infrastructure. With connection points at Heimfeld to A7 and at Harburg to the A1, access by private car is perfect. Meanwhile, nearby Harburg Rathaus S-Bahn station and bus lines directly at Harburger Schloßstraße are all within a few minutes' walking distance.
