Your new home is in Altenessen-Nord/Katernberg. Altenessen, as the northern district of the city of Essen, has been officially divided into the two districts Altenessen-Süd and Altenessen-Nord since its incorporation due to its size.

With around 17,000 inhabitants, Altenessen-Nord is the smaller part of Altenessen. With the Rhine-Herne Canal, it borders on Karnap, the northernmost district of Essen.

The highlight of the district in the truest sense of the word is the Schurenbachhalde with the "slab for the Ruhr area", a 15 meter high steel plate by the American sculptor Richard Serra. With the Allee-Center, Altenessen-Nord has an attractive shopping mall right on the border to Altenessen-Süd.

Around 24,000 people currently live in Katernberg. Part of the Zollverein colliery, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, is located here.
