Location
Environment
The Kreuzberg is one of the highest hills in Berlin, it rises 66 meters above the city. At the very top, the monument to the master builder and architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel has crowned Kreuzberg for around 200 years. The monument bears an iron cross on the top and remains the namesake of the mountain and the district. Viktoriapark nestles against the hill under the monument. Dating from the 19th century, it is one of the most popular and largest public parks in Berlin.
Location description
The geographic centre of the capital is not in Mitte, but in Kreuzberg. More precisely, on a green strip between Alexandrinenstrasse and Lobeckstrasse. If you draw circles with the map radiating out from here, it quickly becomes clear that the real big city life takes place within a few kilometers of this point. Kreuzberg and Mitte. Two dissimilar siblings in the center of Berlin. Culture, night life, work, government. Magical places, world-famous buildings, hidden secrets - everything is here.
The hofgartenhaus is framed like a picture. The neighboring development of Riehmers Hofgarten is the outer frame, the green of mature trees and young plantings is the passepartout. Master mason Riehmer realized his life's work here between 1881 and 1899. He created a unique ensemble of 18 residential buildings around a park-like courtyard. His buildings were supplemented by other magnificent buildings with numerous shops and restaurants in the neighborhood between Yorckstraße, Großbeerenstraße, Hagelberger Straße and Mehringdamm.
Connections
Mehringdamm underground station, an interchange station, connects the city via the U6 and U7. The U6 runs in a north-south direction via Stadtmitte and Friedrichstrasse, the U7 runs through Wilmersdorf and Charlottenburg, among others. You can take buses from Yorckstraße to Kurfürstendamm, for example. The M19 line runs 24 hours a day. The hofgartenhaus is well connected for cyclists. From Hagelberger Straße to Gendarmenmarkt, for example, it's just 2.7 kilometers, mostly on a wide cycle path.
