Living near the Alster

Alsterdorf first appears in records of 1219 as "Alsterthorpe". Until the middle of the 19th century, Alsterdorf was a purely farming and craft village with 150 inhabitants. The Alsterdorfer Anstalten, which are still known to many today, played a major role in the urban development of the district.
Around 1900, the then Building Senator Schumacher began straightening the Alster between the Krugkoppelbrücke and Fuhlsbütteler Schleuse. The main aim was to develop coveted lots of land near the Alster. In the course of this, the Brabandstrasse and Inselstrasse developed into sought-after residential areas. Even today they are among the finest Hamburg addresses.
The garden city settlement between Hindenburgstrasse, Sengelmannstrasse and Alsterdorfer Strasse was built between 1935 and 1938. With its 300 single-family detached houses in red brick and characteristic pointed roofs, it characterizes the Alsterdorf district. Here the streets have romantic names like Birkenhain, Aurikelstieg or An der Blütenmauer.
