The family-friendly city on the left bank of the Lower Rhine with around 230,000 inhabitants is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region in the immediate vicinity of the state capital Düsseldorf. The Rhine-Ruhr area and the concentration of cities between Dortmund and Cologne is the most densely populated region in Europe. Krefeld is located to the southeast of this metropolitan area, and to the north and west it is open to the vast landscape of the Lower Rhine and the Netherlands.
