the independent major city of Bottrop, with around 118,000 residents, is located in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia.

administratively, it belongs to the Münster administrative district. it is a member of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association and the Ruhr Regional Association.

the city of Bottrop borders the municipality of Schermbeck in the Wesel district and the city of Dorsten in the Recklinghausen district to the north, and to the east the city of Gladbeck (also in the Recklinghausen district). to the south, it borders the independent city of Essen, and to the west the independent city of Oberhausen, plus the city of Dinslaken and the municipality of Hünxe, both in the Wesel district.

the Rhine-Herne Canal forms the city boundary with Essen to the south, running roughly parallel with the Emscher, which flows 100 meters further north from east to west.
