Location
Arrive home at Berlin's green rest & recreation region
The locality of Schmöckwitz belongs to the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick. This former fishing village is surrounded by forest and water and is now a popular recreational destination. The advantages of this location are clear indeed: right on the water and close to Berlin's city centre (20 minutes by car), plus good existing local infrastructure. Trams and busses can be reached in a few minutes. Here you can expect accessibility but, nevertheless, a quiet and relaxed residential area.
Schmöckwitz is the southernmost point of the Treptow-Köpenick district and thus also Berlin. It's located on the shores of Lake Zeuthen, an elongated lake through the middle of which runs the Berlin-Brandenburg border. The settlement lies between the lake and other waterways on the one hand, bucolic forests on the other. The old village of Schmöckwitz is located at the confluence of several of these lakes, accessible only from Grünau to the north via the Adlergestell, which continues via the Schmöckwitzer bridge to the smaller still settlement of Schmöckwitzwerder to the east and the Wernsdorfer bridge. The area is served by tram 68 from Grünau, running along the banks of the Dahme through Karolinenhof and over to the local stop at Alt-Schmöckwitz.
This corridor running in and out of Schmöckwitz is surrounded by forest and water, including the Langen See, Seddinsee, Zeuthener See, the Großen Zug and the Krossinsee. These colonies are set up on flood-protected ridges and have been – as archaeological excavations have revealed – inhabited since time immemorial. Compared to other districts in Berlin, Schmöckwitz is relatively sparsely populated.
